The mother who gave birth to Ibrahim
Ibrahim, son of the Prophet ﷺ, was the son of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from Mariyah al-Qibtiyyah may Allah be pleased with her. He was born in Madinah in the latter part of Year 10 after the Hijrah (10 AH), according to the well-known account, and the Prophet ﷺ rejoiced at him and named him Ibrahim after the father of the prophets, peace be upon him. Umm Burdah bint al-Mundhir, the wife of al-Bara' ibn Aws, nursed him, and the Prophet ﷺ used to visit him, kiss him, and carry him. In this there appears his fatherly mercy and tenderness of heart. Ibrahim did not live long, for he died young, around Year 10 after the Hijrah (10 AH), at about eighteen months old. The Prophet ﷺ grieved for him with merciful sorrow and said: "The eye sheds tears, the heart grieves, and we say nothing except what pleases our Lord. Indeed, we are saddened by your parting, O Ibrahim." The day he died coincided with a solar eclipse, so some people thought the sun eclipsed because of his death. The Prophet ﷺ corrected this belief and said: "The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of anyone's death or life." Thus his death became an occasion to affirm tawhid and cleanse faith from superstition. The life of Ibrahim shows the humanity of the Prophet ﷺ and his mercy, patience in calamity, and that lawful grief does not conflict with being content with Allah's decree.
