The appearance of successive signs of prophethood for the Prophet ﷺ at the age of thirty-eight, and the monks and the soothsayers (kuhhan) speaking of them
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ neared forty, the glad tidings of prophethood began to come to him one after another. The first of these was true dreams: he would not see a dream except that it came as clear as the break of dawn. Then seclusion was made beloved to him, so he would withdraw from the noise of Makkah to the Cave of Hira, worshipping and reflecting. Among the signs that preceded his prophethood as well is what is authentically reported in Sahih Muslim: a stone in Makkah greeted him before the mission. It is not correct to say with certainty that all these signs happened specifically at the age of thirty-eight. What is established is that they were before the beginning of revelation, preparing for the revelation that came down to him ﷺ, according to the well-known view, at the age of forty.
