The Expedition of Bir Ma'unah in Safar of Year 4 after the Hijrah (4 AH)
The Expedition of Bir Ma'unah took place in Safar in year 4 AH, after Uhud. Its cause was that Abu Bara Amir ibn Malik asked the Prophet ﷺ to send a group of his Companions to the people of Najd to call them to Islam and teach them, and he gave them his protection. So the Prophet ﷺ sent seventy reciters and appointed al-Mundhir ibn Amr over them. They stopped at Bir Ma'unah between the land of Banu Amir and the lava field of Banu Sulaym, and they sent Haram ibn Milhan with a letter from the Prophet ﷺ to Amir ibn at-Tufayl, who killed him treacherously. Then Amir called on Ri'l, Dhakwan, and Usayyah from Banu Sulaym, and they surrounded the reciters and killed them, with only a few surviving. The Prophet ﷺ was deeply saddened by them, and he performed qunut for a month, praying against those who killed them. It was a tragic missionary incident, not a battle, and it reveals treachery after Uhud, the steadfastness of the reciters, and the sanctity of treaties in the Prophetic biography.

In summary: Abu Bara' Amir ibn Malik, called Mulaa‘ib al-Asinnah, came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Madinah. He invited him to Islam, but he did not enter Islam and did not go away. He said: O Messenger of Allah, if you were to send your Companions to the people of Najd to call them to your religion, I would hope that they would answer them. He said: “I fear for them the people of Najd.” Abu Bara' said: I will protect them. So he sent with him forty men, according to Ibn Ishaq, but in the authentic report they were seventy,
